The Dakota Academy of Performing Arts Presents THE WIZARD OF OZ — YOUNG PERFORMERS’ EDITION

0

Sioux Falls, SD (4/14/2022) — The Dakota Academy of Performing Arts (DAPA) at the Washington Pavilion presents five performances of THE WIZARD OF OZ — YOUNG PERFORMERS’ EDITION April 28–May 1, 2022, at the Orpheum Theater Center. Join Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man as they journey down the Yellow Brick Road. This classic musical will have you remembering why there is “No Place Like Home.” Eighteen-year-old Emma Boyens stars as Scarecrow. She is a senior at Lincoln High School and will study theater at Augustana University in the fall. “I feel like I am getting to challenge myself with this character, to grow and change with this character throughout the whole show,” says Boyens. “The audience will love the dancing, and it’s going to be really fun, since we get to be goofy on stage.” Boyens has performed in about 15 DAPA productions, starting at the age of 9 or 10, and has found her true community of friends through the program. Her two best friends are playing Dorothy and Tin Man. “The best part of DAPA is getting to perform with my best friends, and this show is our last theater experience together before we go off to college. We are excited to see how all of it comes together,” says Boyens. This DAPA production of THE WIZARD OF OZ includes an all-youth cast ages 6–18, some of whom also are doing their own makeup for the shows. But don’t let that fool you. These actors will knock you off your feet with their talent, and the costumes and sets are spectacular. The shows serve as great introduction to the theatre for young audiences while also delighting seasoned theatre-lovers with the wealth of talent displayed by the young performers. The performances are made possible by generous sponsors: Mount Marty University, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Avera and First National Bank in Sioux Falls. Wing Stop also is a sponsor of this show.

To purchase tickets, go to SiouxFallsOrpheum.com, visit the Washington Pavilion Box Office at 301 S. Main Ave. or call 605-367-6000.

Levitt at the Falls Celebrates a Successful 2021 Season

0

Sioux Falls, SD (September 14, 2021) Levitt at the Falls has successfully concluded the 2021 concert season and a return to the Levitt lawn for 40 free,

professional, outdoor summer concerts.  The 2021 concert season was presented by Sanford Health and featured free outdoor concerts from June 11th – September 11th at the Levitt Shell in Falls Park West.  Over 66,000 people attended concerts on the Levitt lawn this summer (an average of 1,788 audience members per show) and over 50,000 viewers live streamed the concerts online.

Executive Director Nancy Halverson is celebrating a successful return to the lawn.  “Levitt at the Falls was able to take our pivoted digital and neighborhood programming from 2020 and build on the success of the 2019 inaugural concert season to bring an integrated, robust programming approach to 2021.  We were able

to welcome our community back to live concerts outdoors on the lawn and also serve our online audience through a partnership with South Dakota Public Broadcasting that allowed us to live stream each of our concerts.  We saw in-person audience numbers grow from our record-breaking 2019 season and were able to significantly increase our impact online through live streaming as well as increase our artist outreach in the community. We are grateful that our community has continued to embrace the Levitt and our mission to build community through music.  We look forward to continued growth in 2022.”

The Levitt was able to employ over 300 musicians as a part of the 2021 season.  Over 118 volunteers contributed over 2,000 hours of community service to make the concert series a reality. The Levitt held 37 free concerts in the 2021 season. 3 of the 40 free shows planned were cancelled due to either severe weather or artist illness.  In 2022, Levitt at the Falls will be back with 50 free concerts.

Levitt at the Falls is a non-profit organization dedicated to building community through music.  In 2019, their inaugural season welcomed over 58,000 concert-goers to the Levitt Shell for 30 free concerts.  In 2020, their concert series went dark due to the pandemic, but pivoted to Levitt In Your Neighborhood outreach and Levitt In Your Living Room digital activities.  Levitt Shell Sioux Falls is part of a national network of outdoor Levitt music venues and concert sites dedicated to strengthening the social fabric of communities. Presenting a broad array of music genres and cultural programming, Levitt venues bring together families, friends and neighbors of all ages and backgrounds.

Levitt at the Falls 2021 Season Opens This Weekend

Sioux Falls, SD (June 8, 2021) After a year hiatus, Levitt at the Falls will launch its 2021 season of 40 free concerts this weekend.  The 2021 concert season is presented by Sanford Health and will feature free outdoor concerts from June 11th – September 11th at the Levitt Shell in Falls Park West.  Opening night will be Friday, June 11th featuring GRAMMY-winning Gullah sensation Ranky Tanky.  The lawn will open at 6:00 pm with music beginning at 6:30 pm.  Local percussion ensemble Groove will be featured as the opening act, and youth vocalist Sophia Santos will perform the national anthem.  Audience members are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets and seating is first-come, first-served on the lawn.  In addition to great headlining groups and opening act musicians, Levitt at the Falls will host 3-4 local food trucks at each concert and beverage sales will be available through JJ’s Wine & Spirits.

Opening night’s featured band, Ranky Tanky, is a GRAMMY award-winning, Charleston, SC-based quintet that performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Their soulful songs are brought to life by mixing the low country Gullah traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B. Playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals can all be found on their latest release Good Time, which won the 2020 GRAMMY for Best Regional Roots album. The word “Gullah” comes from West Africa and means “a people blessed by God,” and “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely to “Work It,” or “Get Funky!”.

Levitt at the Falls’ second concert will be on Saturday, June 12th featuring top Country Billboard artist Lucas Hoge, with an opening act performance from singer/songwriter Analisa Marie.

Levitt at the Falls is a non-profit organization dedicated to building community through music.  In 2019, their inaugural season welcomed over 58,000 concert-goers to the Levitt Shell for 30 free concerts.  In 2020, their concert series went dark due to the pandemic, but the pivoted Levitt In Your Neighborhood outreach and Levitt In Your Living Room digital activities reached over 250,000 households worldwide. The anticipation of the return to the Levitt is building in the community. “Music brings people together and builds community, and so it’s only fitting that the Levitt’s 2021 concert series would provide the community the opportunity to get back together and enjoy live music after the challenges of the past year. The City is proud to partner with Levitt at the Falls to bring vibrancy, momentum and activity to Falls Park West and to our downtown,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken.

The 2021 Season is presented by Sanford Health. “Sanford Health’s commitment to community spans across our entire Region,” said Stacy Wrightsman, Executive Director of Community Relations for Sanford Health.  “Music is healing, and human connection is important. Through the work of the Levitt, community building is happening right here in our backyard.  We are so very proud to support Levitt at the Falls and their 2021 season.

Opening night on Friday, June 11 for Levitt at the Falls will feature the 2020 GRAMMY-winning quintet Ranky Tanky, who bring a fresh and inspiring jazz take to the traditional Gullah music of South Carolina.  Described by NPR as “lively, soulful, honey to the ears”, the award-winning Ranky Tanky will open the Levitt season with a dynamic, not-to-be missed performance.  Closing night on Saturday, September 11 will feature Chicago’s LowDown Brass Band – an all horn band which leans heavily on dancehall and street beat rhythm, with the energy of conscious hip hop, jazz, reggae, and soul.
