November – Professional Development Seminar

0

ZACH HAMILTON WAS FANTASTIC! Artist self care is a very real issue and Zach Hamilton gave a lot of tools and techniques to stay motivated and on task.  Another important portion of care is copyright protection.

Jared Clark of Cutler & Donahoe, one of only a handful of intellectual property lawyers in the state, will present on how an artist can protect their ideas.  For all types of artists, it is important to protect your work.  You’ll walk away with an understanding of the full extent you can go as well as some cheaper/easier ways to protect yourself.

This once a month luncheon will focus on various topics related to pursuing your dream of becoming a professional artist.  We get together at noon on the third Wednesday of the month at Utopia in Falls Landing Cafe.  Attending is free, and Utopia is donating a $10 meal deal that includes entree, drink and dessert.  Please RSVP by the Monday before.

November – Grow A Scene

BUILD A BETTER ART SCENE! Kara Dirkson had a fantastic presentation at last month’s event.  Also, a big thanks to Larry Rehfeld and Jodi Lundgren for coming out and doing portfolio reviews.

On November 9th, the focus will shift to local authors!  Mediated by Thea MIiller Ryan, there will be a panel consisting of representatives from local publishers, magazines and other writing outlets.  The main topic of conversation will be on submission processes and formalities.  What steps can you take to make sure your work stands out from the rest?  They will be available to address whatever questions our local authors have!  So, bring your business cards, samples and list of things you want to know.

Grow A Scene is building into a great event and we’re always open to input!  If you have any comments, suggestions or ideas for speakers, let us know!  You can email Micah Luke directly at mluke@ArtsSiouxFalls.org.
Make sure to come down and join us on November 9th for Grow A Scene.  The event is from 7 to 9pm at Museum of Visual Materials.  See you there!

Grow A Scene – October

BUILD A BETTER ART SCENE! We kicked off Grow A Scene last month with musicians.  Thank you to everyone who came down!  On October 26th, we’ll have it geared towards Visual Artists with special guest speaker Kara Dirkson.

“Kara has a connoisseur’s eye for art and understands the economics behind it. She completed an accreditation program for appraising fine art through the American Society of Appraisers and Northwestern University–the most rigorous personal property program available. She emphasized art history in grad school. To top it off, Kara has worked in various appraisal, curatorial, art sales and teaching positions. In those instances she’s up against something new, she has well honed research skills and an outstanding network of experts at her disposal to solve the toughest art appraising and consultation problems.”

There will also be representatives from multiple galleries in town to do informal portfolio reviews.  This is your chance to have your work looked at by the people you’re trying to sell to.

Please help us with an expected headcount by RSVP’ing by the Monday before at call@artssiouxfalls.org

Grow A Scene

BUILD A BETTER ART SCENE! In partnership with the Museum of Visual Materials, the Arts Council presents a networking opportunity meant for artists.  Sioux Falls has a fantastic and widespread art scene.  The disadvantage of this is we sometimes lose track of one another and what else is going on in the scene.  Grow A Scene is all about getting the people together who make things happen in Sioux Falls.  There is no cost to attend!

The first event will be September 28, from 7 to 9 pm with the focus on the music scene.  We encourage everyone to come and find out more about what is happening in music.  If you’re a musician, this is your chance to find new people to collaborate with and hear some new ideas.  If you’re a promoter or a venue, this is your chance to scout out new talent for upcoming gigs.  This is going to be a great opportunity for all of us to get together!

Also, visual artists – keep your calendar open October 26th.  The next Grow A Scene focuses on you!
