Southeast Behavioral Health and local law officers will be holding a training on March 1 and 2 to train officers to work effectively with people who have mental illnesses and people with mental illnesses that are suicidal. Actors are needed to role play scenarios with the officers, who will be implementing techniques they will be learning into exchanges with people who are mentally ill and/or suicidal. Evaluators will be on hand to give feedback to the officers on how they handled the situation, and options for handling things differently in the future. Actors will be given scripts ahead of time to review, plus information on the mental health issue portrayed in their scenario, so that they can plan how they want to carry out their scenes with the officers. Between 6 and 8 actors are needed per shift from 10:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 3:30 on March 1, and 6 to 8 actors are needed from 10:15 to noon on March 2.  Actors can help on one day or on both days.

Volunteering in this role will truly make a difference for people struggling with thoughts of suicide and mental health issues. Thank you so much for your assistance.

Grow A Scene – February

0

Grow A Scene: Film/Media  Last month’s event was an amazing success!  Carlos de Leon led an in-depth discussion on the challenges and solutions facing the Sioux Falls film scene.  The conversation was so great, the building had to shut down before we finished!  We’re already seeing new projects under development that started that night.

DOUBLE DATES IN FEBRUARY! This month we’ll be hosting two separate Grow A Scene events – Grow A Scene: Music and Grow A Scene: Visual Arts.

Grow A Scene: Music  On February 8th, we have a great pair of speakers to lead a discussion on band management. Jimmy Spiers and V the Noble One, both local musicians who are celebrated in their field, we’ll address the idea of how to get multiple creative personalities all headed in the same direction. This is an important topic for any group of artists, not just musical groups!

Grow A Scene: Visual Arts  Timothy Hoheisel of the Center for Western Studies will be presenting on February 22nd.  The title of his talk will be “The Art of Wounded Knee” and will include information on their upcoming exhibit “Interpretations of Wounded Knee 1973 and 1890.”

Both nights, the doors at the Museum of Visual Materials will open at 7pm and the conversation will start by 7:30.  And of course, there is no cover!  Come learn about the Sioux Falls art scene, how to get involved and meet connect with others like you!

Grow A Scene – December

BUILD A BETTER ART SCENE! Last month we hosted a panel of editors to field questions on literary art submissions.  The conversation was mediated by Thea Miller Ryan and we had an amazing turn out!  We had to ask people to leave at the end because the facility needed to shut down.  That is how you build an art scene!

If you are interested in theatre or performance, this is your month!  We put together a panel of directors, producers, theatre companies, casting agents, modeling agents and more.  This is your chance to find out what acting and performance opportunities are right here in Sioux Falls!  Find out the information you need, have your questions answered and meet artists just like you in our own community.

Join us at the Museum of Visual Materials Dec 14th at 7 pm!
