“REFOCUS” Art Exhibit Challenges Perceptions of Visible Disabilities Through Photography

0

September 26, 2023

Sioux Falls, SD – In an effort to challenge stereotypes and reshape perceptions, “REFOCUS” – a groundbreaking art exhibit featuring photography of individuals with visible disabilities – is set to captivate audiences. This incredible event is the result of a unique collaboration between two nonprofits in the community, Rare by Design and Untitled.10.

For one night only, on October 21, “REFOCUS” will take center stage at the newly unveiled
downtown event space, Monick Yards. This highly-anticipated exhibit will showcase the work of lead artist and photographer, Hollie Leggett, as she skillfully captures individuals with visible disabilities in an editorial and uplifting light.

The core mission of “REFOCUS” is to bridge the gap between initial perceptions and the rich
human experiences that lie beneath visible disabilities. People with visible disabilities often face immediate assumptions and judgments due to their conditions, a reality they cannot conceal.

This exhibit seeks to challenge these preconceived notions through the powerful medium of
photography, with the aim of telling unique stories, dismantling stigmas, and challenging
misconceptions. Hollie Leggett’s artistry shines through as she presents 14 remarkable models, each custom styled to showcase their distinctive personalities and narratives. The result is a collection of visually stunning and emotionally resonant portraits that invite viewers to see beyond the surface and into the lives of these extraordinary individuals.
What sets “REFOCUS” apart is its unwavering commitment to accessibility in all its forms. From the physical space to model biographies and intangibles, every aspect of this exhibit has been carefully designed to ensure inclusivity and accommodate the diverse needs of all visitors.

“REFOCUS” is not merely an art exhibit; it is an editorial and artistic experience that invites
viewers to see visual disabilities in a new light. By reframing the public’s outlook and
encouraging a fresh perspective, this meticulous exhibit serves as a catalyst for change and
understanding.
Join us Saturday, October 21 from 4-7pm, for a free one-of-a-kind celebration of community,
inclusivity, and artistry. “REFOCUS” promises to be an evening that challenges perceptions,
sparks conversations, and invites all to embrace a new frame of mind.

9 Artists Receive the 2023 Midwest Award for Artists with Disabilities

0

Please note that we acknowledge both identity first and person first framing of disability identity. When we use the phrase “disabled artists,” we intend to align with the Social Model of Disability understanding that people are disabled by environmental and societal barriers.

Arts Midwest is thrilled to announce the inaugural winners of the Midwest Award for Artists with Disabilities. This award, designed to support accessibility in the arts and celebrate the exceptional work of disabled Midwestern visual artists, has received an incredible response from the artistic community.  Over 200 artists applied to receive funds, and a panel of seven reviewers narrowed the pool to nine finalists from across the Midwest.

We are delighted to recognize the creativity and dedication of nine incredible artists who have been making a significant impact in the field:

  • Matthew Bodett (Chicago, Illinois)
  • Larissa Danielle (Bloomington, Indiana)
  • Lauren Bonney (Decorah, Iowa)
  • Maggie Laycock (Sterling Heights, Michigan)
  • Madison Rubenstein (Bloomington, Minnesota)
  • Bonnie Lee (Fargo, North Dakota)
  • Andrea Sosa Fontaine (Cleveland Heights, Ohio)
  • Mary Payton Zajicek (Sioux Falls, South Dakota)
  • Sarah Muehlbauer (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

As part of this award, each recipient will receive $3,000 to support their artistic journey, with no restrictions on how they choose to use this funding.

“We are honored to support these incredible artists through the Midwest Award for Artists with Disabilities,” says Torrie Allen, President and CEO of Arts Midwest. “We believe it’s one small step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible arts community where visual artists with disabilities can thrive.”

Established in 2022, the Midwest Award for Artists with Disabilities is supported by the James Edward Scherbarth and Paul Francis Mosley Giving Fund. The award was created in honor of the late James Edward Scherbarth, an award-winning visual artist, visual arts teacher, and advocate of arts access who lived and worked in Minnesota. Jim believed that creativity lives in everyone, and he dedicated his career to helping people express themselves through the visual arts.

Announcing… Season 21!

0

On Friday our Managing Artistic Director, Oliver, announced our exciting 21st season full of theatre history landmarks!

The season begins with Disney’s third venture into stage adaptations, The Little Mermaid, running September 28th to October 7th of this year. We continue with a Sioux Falls holiday staple, our third annual larger-than-life production of A Christmas Carol this December 15th to 23rd. Our 21st season proceeds with another new tradition, our second annual production of The Premiere Premieres. This new play development initiative focuses on collaboration among local artists resulting in a completely local production that runs February 15th to 18th of 2024. The fourth mainstage show of the season is the first collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma!, which performs April 11th to 20th, 2024. Lastly, our compelling 21st season closes with an electrifying musical that broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of “rock musical”. Reflecting the creators’ observations of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 1960s, our Season 21 finale Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical runs from June 13th to to the 22nd of 2024.

Season 21 mainstage productions will perform at the historic Orpheum Theater of downtown Sioux Falls. In the new season we will also introduce a new offering, The Passion Projects, a piece of expanded programming we define as: micro-budget productions that feed our community’s appetite for straight plays, edgy storylines, small ensembles, and experimental projects. The venture’s inaugural show is written by one of the great American playwrights, Tennessee Williams. The Glass Menagerie will run from March 15th to 17th away from our home venue of the Orpheum at a location to be announced and although tickets will be sold separately from season subscriptions, Season 21 subscribers will receive a discount if they are interested in attending this performance.

Season 21 subscriptions are available exclusively to our renewing members online, over the phone (605-367-6000), and in person at the box office (301 S. Main Ave.) from April 13th to 19th to allow for priority seating. To renew your subscription online, sign in to your ticket shop account here and once you are logged in you will see a Personal Offers section that will allow you to proceed in renewing your season subscription. Beginning April 20th, Season 21 subscriptions are available to the public online, over the phone, and in person. On that date, a direct link will be available on our subscription page with full details. Season 21 subscriptions are $177.25, of which TPP receives $150. If you are excited about TPP’s upcoming season and want to support us in making these productions possible, we as a 501(c)(3) non-profit accept tax-deductible donations. If you have interest in partnership and sponsorship opportunities for these productions, please contact us directly.

Sioux Falls Jazz And Blues Society Legacy Extended Through Donations Of Remaining Funds To Levitt, SF Arts Council

0

Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society is proud to announce two financial gifts in support of music and arts education this morning.

An endowment held at the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, in the amount of $55,000, will benefit Levitt at the Falls to be used specifically for music education in our area, a direct tie to Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society mission.

“Levitt at the Falls is grateful to receive this endowment gift from the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society,” Nancy Halverson, Executive Director of Levitt at the Falls, said.

Halverson says the Levitt will use the endowment funds to build on Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society’s impactful work to reach, teach, and inspire the next generation with music education.

In addition, Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society will be donating $40,000 to the Sioux Falls Arts Council’s Artist Micro Grant program, which supports artists across all disciplines with $250 or $500 grants funding supplies, professional development, and a variety of other necessities for work.

“There is no doubt the positive impact Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society has had on our community over decades of their vibrant programming,” Kellen Boice, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council, said. “We are honored for the opportunity to continue Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society legacy though our Artist Micro Grant program and the ripple effect those grants have on our arts community.”

With these donations, the Board of Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society will dissolve the organization, knowing the Sioux Falls community’s support of music and the arts is in good hands. These final gifts are made in the spirit of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society’s mission – We celebrate jazz and blues through community, education, and events.

Statement from the Board of Directors:
“The last few years, including during the pandemic, have been challenging not just for SFJB but also other smaller arts non-profits. We are proud of the programming we supported during this time, and especially proud that we are able to continue our mission of music and arts education through Levitt at the Falls and the Sioux Falls Arts Council. THANK YOU to the community, volunteers, staff, directors, and sponsors for their support over the years.”

The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society existed for more than 35 years, celebrating America’s original artform – jazz and blues – and created impactful live music and education events including The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Festival – JazzFest, a Concert Series, The Jazz Diversity Project, The All-City Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Camp, scholarship programs, and more.

Through these events and programs, the organization impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, bringing life-changing music experiences that developed young musicians into lifelong appreciators and artists, supported recreational and professional musicians, and was central to the arts scene in the state and region.

Sioux Falls, SD (11/29/2022) — The Visual Arts Center in the Washington Pavilion has partnered with Art Collective Sioux Falls to host one of the largest gatherings of local artists in the Sioux Falls area. Join us on Friday, December 2, from 4–10 p.m. and Saturday, December 3, from 3–10 p.m. to support local artists.

“We are excited to host the Art Collective event this weekend and shine the spotlight on the talented artists making beautiful things in our community,” says Brandon Hanson, Director of Museums for the Washington Pavilion. “We hope this event also brings some people through our doors who maybe have never set foot inside our galleries, so they come back and see us again in the future.”

The show will feature local artists of all ages and is free to attend. There will be a full bar to enjoy cocktails while meeting artists and also a $1 raffle for pieces from the artists, including prints, originals and more.

The Everist and Contemporary Galleries, including the “Guild Hall: An Adventure in the Arts” exhibit, will be available. However, the other six exhibits will be temporary uninstalled to accommodate for this event. Admission to the Visual Arts Center is free during this time.

wa sa wak pa’la: Works from USD Faculty | University Gallery | Now – Dec. 31, 2022

The binding element of the works in this exhibition is the relationship between the geography of the city of Vermillion and the campus and Art Department of the University of South Dakota. The complex medium and design of the works are a demonstration of human diversity in visual communication and a reflection of the influence of land, time and place.

Everything Is Ordinary | Contemporary Gallery | Now – Jan. 22, 2023

Born and raised in South Dakota, Mark Stemwedel’s paintings are inspired and informed by the everyday world around him. The paintings depict the familiar views of the everyday, capturing little aesthetic moments in the mundane. His work has been exhibited extensively within the region, and he continues to expand his reach to a broader audience.

Everything Was Beautiful | Shultz Gallery | Now – Jan. 31, 2023

Artist Emilia Van Ert loves flowers and paints them in oil, creating hyper-realistic images on canvas. The variety, shapes and colors of flowers are exciting to her, and she adds dewdrops to provide even more detail and depth. She admires the work of the old masters from the Renaissance time period and that inspiration shows in her beautiful still life paintings.

Travel | Entrance Gallery | Now – Feb. 25, 2023

Byron Banasiak is a photographer and filmmaker from Vermillion, S.D., who currently works for the South Dakota Department of Tourism. Through his travel photographs we see a journey of self-discovery develop through experience. This exhibit explores the beauty of differing lands and demonstrates the nature of discovery.

Waiting for the Muse: A Carl Grupp Retrospective | Bates Trimble Gallery | Now – May 1, 2023

Carl Grupp found a muse in the stories of his everyday life. He once said, “Much of my work has to do with telling stories, whether it be through my artwork or my teaching. I enjoy attempting to imply a story or to make people wonder and think.” Through traditional genres of self-portraiture, landscape and still life, Grupp found his own surrealist and personal style of image making over the course of his professional art career. A truly unique and prolific artist, this exhibition presents a small selection of Grupp’s larger body of work.

Coming soon to the Visual Arts Center:

TOPO | Jerstad Gallery | Dec. 5, 2022 – April 23, 2023

Artist Quintin Owens reflects on Black Hills landmarks Look Out Mountain, Crow Peak, Spearfish Mountain, Bear Butte and Terry Peak as objects of wonder. Each location is represented by its seven highest topographic lines utilizing topographical contour maps and satellite elevation. By turning to the language of maps and data to create form, he joins a long history of constructing and distorting place and scale.

Don’t forget about “Guild Hall: An Adventure in the Arts”!

The Everist Gallery currently features more than 70 original works by 50 of the country’s most celebrated artists including Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Thomas Moran and more.

“We are grateful to each participating artist, every person who voted for their favorite piece and the City of Sioux Falls for their support of our mission to bring art to the people. We can’t wait to see this gorgeous piece on permanent display in

our community,” says Regan Smith, SculptureWalk Board President.

The winning sculpture is created using recycled stainless steel and copper and depicts a mounted elk bust.

“I would like to say I am very honored and thankful to have the privilege of getting one of my sculptures installed in the city of Sioux Falls,” says Sculptor Travis Sorenson.

People’s Choice voting was open to the public through September 30. Each year’s winning sculpture is purchased by the City of Sioux Falls and added to the community’s collection of public art.

“The Visual Arts Commission board proudly supports this year’s SculptureWalk People’s Choice Award recipient, Travis Sorenson. We look forward to including Sorenson’s sculpture, “Elk,” in the City’s permanent collection,” says Joe Schaeffer, Visual Arts Commission Chair.

In addition to this award, Sorenson won a 2021 Best of Show Award for his sculpture “Maximus Moose,” a 2019 Best of Show Award for his sculpture “Cimarron,” a 2018 Best of Show Award for his sculpture “Horse,” and a 2017 Best of Show Award for his sculpture “Whirlwind of Life.” SculptureWalk’s Best of Show winners represent the best-of-the-best sculptures as judged on artistic merit and creativity.
