Sioux Falls, S.D. — The SFAC features a new visual artist every two months in an effort to give artists who have not yet had a solo exhibition in Sioux Falls the chance to do so. Artists are selected by a panel of jurors and are then presented to the public in a celebratory open house. These events are free and open to the public. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be available.

Join us August 9th, 2018 as we welcome visual artist Mary Payton into the Sioux Falls Arts Council Community Gallery.

“This series is an indulgence. I am caught up in an exploration of my unique visual experiences, striving to convey what it feels like to be trapped inside of the filter my brain is determined to use. My hope is that these pieces reach the audience with a pleasant, energetic, positive slant. I use vivid color combinations and repetitive strokes to push those feelings across the space between art and viewer. I hope for individuals to find landscapes, animals, people, or objects among the chaos of dots and fragments of color.”

You can find Mary’s work on Instagram @paytonology, or by visiting paytonology.com.

Mary’s open house will be from 5 to 7PM with an artist talk at 6PM.

The SFAC is wheelchair accessible from the back entrance of the Crane Centre.

The Featured Visual Artist Program is rooted in Sioux Falls Imagined, our community’s long-term cultural plan.

Sioux Falls Imagined: A Cultural Plan for a Vibrant and Prosperous City, approved by the City of Sioux Falls in July 2014, named the Sioux Falls Arts Council as the organization given the charge of implementing the plan. From the Artists and Creative Workers task force findings, a strong need identified for the local art community was alternative exhibition space(s). The Featured Artist Exhibit at the Sioux Falls Arts Council office opened in May 2016 as a way to start filling this need.

The Sioux Falls Arts Council, located in the Crane Centre at 8th & Railroad 326 E 8thSt #106A, is open Monday-Friday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, First Fridays 5:00 – 7:00 pm, and by appointment.
