Janet Judson: Andalusian Adventure

By its very nature, watercolor is a medium which encourages great expression.  With transparent colors and water, I am able to create movement, depth, and value.  My favorite subject is flowers done with a total “wet on wet” approach.  With florals in the placing of brush and color on wet paper, I am able to feel the curve of a petal or the line of a leaf.  With subsequent wetting of the paper, the glazing produces more subtle color variations and value.  After 17 years of my journey with watercolor, I feel there is yet much to learn in technique and interpretation.

In April, 2015, I spent two weeks at Benejarafe, Spain, with the well-known Wisconsin artist, Karlyn Holman and a group of watercolorists.  We gathered at LaFinca, an artist’s retreat, and had daily excursions through the Andalusian countryside.  The gorgeous flowers, the shadowed white buildings and the geometry and color of the hills provided subjects for studio and plein air painting.  The result is this group of watercolors and mixed media, “An Andalusian Adventure”.  As always, the flowers were my greatest inspiration.

Artist Biography

Janet began watercolor painting in 1999 after retiring as microbiology supervisor at the South Dakota State Health Laboratory, Pierre, SD.   Her watercolor experience began with monthly classes from Patricia Johnson, Watertown, SD, now residing in Bokeelia, Florida, and has been a journey including workshops and classes from many artists including Zoltan Szabo,  Susan Luzier, Karen Knutson, Diane Maxey, Karlyn Holman, Rose Edin, Mark Mehaffey, Gerald Brommer, Janet Rogers, and Jennifer Stone.  From each of these, she has learned watercolor techniques and design while developing her own style.  She has been recognized with awards in local and regional shows.
