Dakota Sky Prepares For Sixth Annual Season

The Dakota Sky International Piano Festival is preparing for their upcoming Sixth Annual Season, which takes place from July 21- August 4 at the Belbas Theater of the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. During the two weeks, there will be be 7 evening recitals, 4 free Children’s Concerts, 4 free lunch-time seminars, and a Young Artist Program, all featuring some of the world’s foremost pianists and educators.

Evening Performances

The evening performances are semi-casual concerts that take place in the intimate setting of the Belbas Theater.

The Recital Series kicks off on July 21 with a solo recital by Sioux Falls’ own Angelina Gadeliya, followed by American virtuoso Gregory DeTurck in his first appearance at Dakota Sky. South African multiple Grammy nominee Petronel Malan will perform again, as well as the dynamic husband and wife duo of Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung. And, to celebrate their sixth season, audience-favorite Adam Golka will perform in solo recital.

The Spotlight Series will begin with a recital featuring music for voice and piano by local composers, featuring Paul Sanchez along with other guests. The series concludes with a chamber music recital featuring the Delphi Trio and members of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.

Education and Outreach

Dakota Sky continues to develop its education and outreach efforts. This year’s Community Education program consists of a series of free Children’s Concerts and free lunch-time Seminars. Their Director of Children’s Education, Jose Luis Hernandez-Estrada, fresh from his first year working with the Abreu Fellows Program in Boston and Venezuela, will present a series of exciting concerts geared for children grades K-5. The kids get to sit on-stage and interact with the musicians in an active, participatory setting. The Seminar Series is an informal lunch-time discussion session with the guest artists, on topics tailored for both musicians and novice arts lovers. Funding for the Community Education Program is provided in part by the South Dakota Humanities Council.

The Dakota Sky Young Artist Program, now in its second year, features auditioned students from around the world who come to Sioux Falls to participate in private lessons, master classes, seminars, and discussion sessions with Festival staff and guest artists. They also have two performance opportunities, which are free and open to the public. The Young Artists Program is the first and only of its kind in the area, furthering their goal to be a center for music education in the region.
